General Description of Duties:
Handles student counseling, advisement, and externship placement
Verifies student training, placement follow-up and preparing placement reports
Provides facility requirements for externship site compliance
Prepares externship folders for orientation
Coordinates with the other programs and follow-up with students until the complete the program, graduates, and are placed in successful careers
Records completion of required cases at externship sites
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Orient self to hospital site assigned
Orient externs to hospital facility as assigned
Monitor externs for deviations from accepted protocol in the areas of attitude, interpersonal relations, aseptic technique, knowledge and skill, and patient and health team safety.
Document violations of clinical standards using the correct forma and advise the student constructively, monitoring student for positive change or improved behavior
Intervene on behalf of school when behavior of extern or circumstances may jeopardize affiliation with clinical site
Monitor student progress with regard to meeting clinical objectives through observation and by collecting and evaluating appropriate clinical documentation, i.e. time cards, evaluations, case logs.
Counsel students every two weeks with documentation.
Maintain student records, performance evaluation and cases
Place students on attendance probation as necessary and monitor student for compliance with terms of probation.
Tutor students with planned exercises in areas of weakness
Provide team support to staff as necessary by acting as a substitute or assisting on campus as needed.
Supplement student material when needed by sharing experience
Attend clinical staff meetings and faculty meetings as needed
Assist with marketing and affiliation meetings when necessary.
Act as a liaison between School and clinical site and maintain harmonious working relationship between school, clinical site and student.
Submit required documentation to Clinical Site prior to externship
Prepare balanced rotation schedules through various hospital departments for extern
Communicate changes in student assignment to staff
Communicate progress of each student at staff meeting or as needed if notable event occurs
Attend outside workshops and seminars of improving instructional and professional skills when time and resources permit.
Assist financial aid and other administrative departments by distributing call slips or sending students in to campus as required
Communicate schedule changes prior to intended change.
Hold a current California active license as a Registered Nurse; and
Hold a baccalaureate degree from an approved school; or a valid teaching credential; or have completed a minimum of one year full- time teaching experience in a state approved registered nursing or vocational or practical nursing, or psychiatric technician school within the last five years; or met community college or state university teaching requirements in California; and

Hold a current California active license as a Vocational Nurse; and

Explain grading system, policies and procedures and expectations of students on 1st day of class.

Counsel and discipline nursing students as appropriate. Take an active part in resolving student nursing issues. Refer to student services director if necessary.
Attend staff meetings and other college activities such as VN graduation.
Act as student advocates.
Coordinate with other departments such as Student Services to ensure that student concerns are addressed in timely manner.
Communicate all concerns pertaining to students to the VN director.

General Description of Duties:
Provides clinical instruction to students in approved health care settings, adhering to the policies of the clinical setting and the College.
Participate in College and/or DON committee assignments Three 8/hour clinical shifts per week or 2 12/hour clinical shifts per week and 1 3- hour course load assignment are required.
Clinical experiences may be facility assigned or completed in the clinical simulation lab as assigned.
Clinical instructors hired full time for the Clinical Simulation Lab are expected to work 40 hours/week in the Simulation Lab. Part time Clinical.
Discuss with students their concerns and/or problems directly or indirectly related to learning experience .
Is responsible to assist the student to develop an understanding of values, attitudes, and ideals appropriate to the health care profession.
Establish and maintain relationships with new and existing clinical sites.
To participate in faculty meetings, both formally and informally with didactic and clinical faculty members.
Provide clinical, classroom, and clinical simulation lab instruction.
Supervise student groups in clinical areas (maintains presence in the facility during entire student clinical time if not precepted).
Orient students to the clinical area, and demonstrates proper procedures.
Responsible for producing and distributing course learning objectives and student schedules to the clinical facilities prior to student attendance at the facility.
Lead discussions and elicit information from students which demonstrate that students are learning and accomplishing the clinical objectives.
Maintain clinical standards and course expectations throughout each course or term.
Evaluate and grade student performance. Meets with students at midterm for formal evaluation and again at the end of the course as to progress and performance.
Maintain the professional practice knowledge base needed to instruct learners in contemporary nursing practice.
